I Europa lever murmeldjur i alpina bergstrakter (till exempel Alperna, Karpaterna och Pyrenéerna). Även i Asien finns murmeldjur som har anpassat sig till höga bergsområden men vanligast är murmeldjur där på stäpper. I Amerika finns de flesta arterna i subarktiska regioner. Skogsmurmeldjuret förekommer i stora delar av centrala och nordöstra Nordamerika. Murmeldjur finns alltså bara i tempererade och kalla regioner av norra halvklotet och saknas i varma områden.

  In Europe, marmots live in alpine mountains (such as the Alps, the Carpathians and the Pyrenees). In Asia there are marmots that have adapted to high mountain areas, but most are there on the steppe. In America, most species are in the subarctic regions. Marmots living in the woods occur in large parts of central and northeastern North America. Marmot thus only live in temperate and cold regions of the northern hemisphere, and they are lacking in warm areas.
